Important changes to reporting since July 1998
Quarterly air quality monitoring reports have been produced since July 1975. Over time presentation and reporting of data have changed. The changes made in the 3rd quarter 1998 report, in relation to previous reports, are as follows:
- Other than the NSW government long-term reporting goals, the exceedences reported previously were against NHMRC guidelines. The exceedences reported in this report are against NEPM standard levels (the maximum concentrations as outlined in the NEPM standards for ambient air quality). This report does not take allowable exceedences as specified under the NEPM into account.
- Previously, the monthly averages calculated were geometric means. The monthly averages calculated in the quarterly air quality monitoring reports are arithmetic means.
- The 90-percentile values calculated previously were the estimated 90-percentiles based on the assumption that the distribution was log-normal. The 90-percentile values in the quarterly air quality monitoring reports are true 90-percentiles based on the actual data sets. Please refer to the Calculation of Averages and Spread section for calculation details.
- Data with less than 25% data availability is shown as data not available (***).
- The EPA used the Sydney Pollution Index (SPI) to report daily pollution levels from 1978 to 1993. The SPI provided a single index for the Sydney region. It was replaced by the Regional Pollution Index (RPI) in March 1993, providing information on pollution levels for five regions; three regions in Sydney, the Lower Hunter and the Illawarra. The EPA had continued to report the SPI for historical content. However, in light of current knowledge about air quality in the region, the SPI is no longer considered relevant and will no longer be reported.

Please note that the Campbelltown ozone and oxides of nitrogen data and the Camden ozone data are industry-supplied data and have not undergone EPA QA/QC procedures. These data are reproduced in the quarterly reports as they were received by the then EPA.

Errata issued for Quarterly Air Quality Monitoring Reports
Occasionally, as part of the on-going quality assurance process, it is necessary to correct data that have been included in the quarterly air quality reports. If erroneous data are found reports are re-issued.
The following quarterly reports have been re-issued:
