Regional climate change impacts
Improving our understanding of what climate changes are likely, and the impacts of these changes on NSW sectors, industries and communities, can help us to respond more effectively to climate change.
Business and community need consistent, high quality information, data and tools. The NSW Government is working with the University of NSW (UNSW) to develop regional climate change projections. The Government is assessing the projected impacts of these changes on a regional basis across in NSW.
How is the regional assessment being developed
In the regional assessment project, the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) and the Department of Water and Energy (DWE) are working together to assess the likely effects of climate change on our physical environment. In particular, the project is looking at the effects of climate change in specific NSW regions on:
- sea level
- floods.
The project is then examining the impacts of these changes on land, coastal hazards and flood risk, and natural ecosystems across NSW. It will provide a basic integrated assessment of possible biophysical changes in NSW by 2050 (and possible changes to coastal hazards by 2050 and 2100).

The project is based on the State Plan regions and considers the various climate zones in NSW.
This work is ongoing, but results to date provide a preliminary regional assessment that will support community and business decision making.
