How key threatening processes are listed
The Threatened Species Conservation Act encourages community involvement in the protection of threatened species. Anyone can propose that a key threatening process be listed or removed. The procedure is as follows:
1. A person or organisation sends a nomination to the Scientific Committee. This can:
- nominate a particular threat to native plants and animals to be listed as a key threatening process
- request that a key threatening process be removed from the threatened species list.
2. The Scientific Committee assesses all nominations, and decides to either accept or reject them.
3. If the committee accepts a nomination, it will make a preliminary determination to either support or not support the proposal. The preliminary determination is then placed on public exhibition for a period of at least 30 days. As part of the public exhibition process:
- The preliminary determination is published on this website.
- A notice advertising the preliminary determination is placed in the Government Notices section of the Sydney Morning Herald (usually the Friday edition).
- Where a determination is likely to affect a particular part of NSW, a notice is also placed in a local paper on the same day or in the following week, depending on the publication schedule of the local paper.
During the public exhibition period, members of the public can send submissions about the determination to the Scientific Committee.
4. The committee then makes a final determination about the matter. In doing this, it must consider all submissions received during the exhibition period. The final determination is also published on this website, and advertised in a notice in newspapers.
Nominate a key threatening process
To make a nomination to the Scientific Committee, download the form and send it to the committee. You should include any relevant information that demonstrates the criteria for listing are met. The nomination forms provide guidance on the type of information to include with your nomination.
