Engaging communities

Individuals and communities play an essential role in putting in place decisions that promote a sustainable environment. Who cares about the environment? tells us that people across NSW are increasingly taking on this challenge through their actions at home and in their communities.

To engage a community at the local level first we need to understand who the local community is and how various parts of the community can be drawn into contributing to a local environment project of decision. A guide for engaging communities in environmental planning and decision making and What we need is...a community education project provide good starting points for working with communities to bring about ongoing change.

Assessing a community project for it's successes, possible improvements and next steps should be part of any local environmental activities. Does your project make a difference? provides an easy guide to planning and carrying out evaluation for many different types of community projects and activities.
