DECC has an important role in providing sustainability resources and support to other government and non-government agencies, business and the broader communities.

DECC produces a number of state of our environment reports that provide a good insight into the environment in NSW environment:

State of the Environment report is a broad ranging report on the condition of the environment in NSW. SoE 2006 is the sixth report prepared by DECC, with previous reports published in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2003. SoE reports are structured around six major themes: Toward Environmental Sustainability, Human Settlement, Atmosphere, Land, Water and Biodiversity.

State of the Beaches is a scorecard of recreational water quality measured at estuarine sites in Sydney and along the coast from the Illawarra to the Hunter.

State of the parks provides a snapshot of the condition and management of the NSW park system.

The results and outcomes of DECC's completed and ongoing science, social and economic research can be reviewed on the website. Topics areas include:

  • Scientific research in fields as diverse as ecology, plant conservation and research, the Wollemi Pine through to cultural heritage and archaeology.
  • Abstracts and references from DECC's science seminar series, such as the half-day seminar on the ecology and conservation of Spotted-tailed Quolls (also known as Tiger Quolls) in NSW.
  • A range of social research which examines the environment and the NSW community, the environment and ethnic communities, community attitudes and behaviour towards litter, and the status of environmental education in early childhood education.
  • Economic research, providing insights into issues such as the impacts of protected areas on regional economies in NSW.
